The encounter with Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé was achieved thanks to Jean Cocteau whose exhibition we have just launched. After visiting it, Pierre Bergé got back to us with the opening exhibition of his brand new Foundation. We went to work with paper as we would have worked with textile. We cut, creased and folded strips in order to find the shape capable of unifying the entire presentation and releasing the dresses from the showcases. Ultimately, a long flexible ribbon prevailed in our model. It unrolls freely through space such as a giant stage and carries the models. Such a shape could not have been imagined on our computer screens, it appeared in our hands. Impressed, Yves Saint Laurent kindly argued: “Do you really intend to display my dresses on plastic?”. Indeed, we have designed a Plexiglas object! We showed the draft to the largest manufacturer and came back with very fine samples which prevailed. Yet, the manufacturing of this unique, custom-made piece, designed to fit the space such as a dress, required an elaborate and perfect modelling. Pierre Bergé assumed all the risks, even showing the models without any barrier: he was guided by a clear understanding of his audience, and indeed no one ever touched the dresses. Such trust encouraged us to innovate! This exhibition thus marks the beginning of a long collaboration between the agency and the Yves Saint Laurent collection as well as a blooming romance!
